Paying an Italian supplier: name-to-IBAN checks before you wire
Updated to
In short: since October 9, 2025, payment service providers in euro-area Member States must offer their customers a check that the payee name matches the IBAN before a euro credit transfer is authorized (Regulation (EU) 2024/886, Article 5c). The duty is on the payer's provider; do not assume a wire from a US bank comes with it. Veryfy's free anti-scam check tests whether the IBAN is correctly written and from a country consistent with the company, in Italian.

What the EU rule says
Article 5c of Regulation (EU) 2024/886 provides that a payer's payment service provider (PSP) must offer a service ensuring verification of the payee. The provider performs it immediately after the payer enters the payee's details and before the payer can authorize the credit transfer. Where the name and the account identifier do not match, the payer is notified that authorizing the transfer might send the funds to an account not held by the payee indicated (EUR-Lex: Regulation (EU) 2024/886).
The compliance dates are October 9, 2025 for PSPs located in a Member State whose currency is the euro and July 9, 2027 for PSPs located in a Member State whose currency is not the euro. The obligation is addressed to the payer's PSP. Ask your own bank whether it offers any payee-name check on a wire to Italy; do not assume it does.
Why it matters for business email compromise
The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center describes business email compromise as a scam that targets businesses performing legitimate transfer-of-funds requests (FBI IC3: Business Email Compromise PSA). The typical sign is a change of bank details by email. See BEC and wire fraud with an Italian counterparty for the full playbook.
A checklist before the first wire
- Take the bank details from the signed contract or the first invoice, never from a later email alone.
- Confirm any change by phone, using a number from an independent source such as the company's registered record (Registro Imprese, the Italian business register portal (InfoCamere)), not the number in the email.
- Compare the registered name of the VAT holder with the account holder's name on the invoice (see Italian VAT number lookup).
- Send a small test payment first if your process allows it.
What Veryfy checks, and what it does not
The free Check anti-truffa runs after you buy a company product (Verifica €19, Decisione €49, Istruttoria €99, or a single-signal product from €5.90). On the IBAN it checks that it is correctly written and that the country is consistent with the company. It does not confirm that the account belongs to the company or match the account holder's name; that is the job of the bank-side check above.
Every company product comes with a free Check anti-truffa (anti-scam check): it looks at the VAT number in the EU VIES register, free webmail or disposable email, domain age, domains flagged for malware or phishing, SPF and DMARC protection, the VAT number shown on the website, data breaches affecting the site, and whether the IBAN is correctly written and from a country consistent with the company.
The service and the report are in Italian, built from Italian official sources: company names, offices and procedures keep their original Italian wording. Veryfy does not offer a translated report.
