How to Verify a Professional Before Engaging Them

Published on · Updated to

In short: a consultant, a specialised craftsperson or a freelance professional often has no company to verify: they operate under their own VAT number as a natural person. Before engaging an important assignment, or advancing a payment, you can still check protests, proceedings against them and any offices in other companies: public data, not a judgement on their competence.

Why a professional often does not emerge from a company check

A sole proprietorship or a freelance professional with a VAT number has, in most cases, no company to look up in the Registro Imprese with shareholders and directors distinct from the person themselves: the professional is the subject, not a separate entity. A check designed for companies — filed financial statements, corporate offices, beneficial owner — has little to work on in these cases. The natural person, verified directly, is the correct level.

What you can check before engaging the professional

What this service does NOT verify

It does not verify professional competence, the quality of past work, or registration with a professional register or order where required — for that, direct references, a portfolio of previous work, or consulting the relevant register are needed. This service covers a different and complementary plan: the person's public financial and legal situation, not their abilities.

When it makes sense to do it

It makes sense above all for engagements of significant value, relationships meant to last over time, or when the contract provides for an advance before work begins: situations in which a sign of past financial difficulty on the professional's part would change your decision on how to structure payments, not necessarily whether to proceed.

The limit of this check

You may use it only by declaring the purpose "checking an ongoing or prospective professional or contractual relationship" — not for a generic check on anyone. It shows public facts with source and date, never a judgement on the person's professional reliability.

The Person Check report (€29, or €49 for offices/stakes/properties) covers this scenario too, not only guarantors and shareholders.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a freelance professional often not show up in a traditional company check?

A sole proprietorship (ditta individuale) or a freelance professional with a VAT number often has no company to look up in the Registro Imprese: the professional is the subject itself, not a separate entity with distinct financial statements and corporate officers.

What can you check on a professional before engaging them?

Protests and insolvency proceedings against them, offices in other companies (extended tier), and registered properties (extended tier, Catasto, the land registry): useful above all if the engagement involves an advance or payment on progress of works.

Does this check tell you whether the professional is competent?

No: it does not verify professional competence, the quality of past work, or registration with a professional register. It covers only the person's public financial and legal situation, a plan complementary to direct references.
